Birth chart

What your birth chart really reveals — from the big three (sun, moon, ascendant) through the 10 planets to the 12 houses. And how jume uses your natal chart to give you personal night impulses each evening.

What is a birth chart?

The birth chart is the astrological image of the sky at the exact moment of your birth.

A birth chart (also called a natal chart or radix) is a circular map showing where the sun, moon and all the planets of the solar system were — at the exact time and place you came into the world.

The circle is divided into twelve segments: the 12 houses, which represent different areas of life. The planets spread across these houses and each sit in one of the 12 zodiac signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini …). In addition, the planets form angles to each other — the so-called aspects — which show how different energies work together within you.

The result is a unique astrological signature that applies only to you. No one has exactly the same birth chart — even twins often differ by a few minutes of birth time, which shifts the ascendant and the houses.

Astrology understands the birth chart not as fixed fate but as a map of your potential: strengths, challenges, patterns — which you can consciously explore, accept or change.

How is a birth chart calculated?

Three details are enough — but all three matter.

A precise calculation needs your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. Each of these details contributes decisively to the result:

Date of birth: Determines the position of the sun, which moves through a zodiac sign roughly once a month. The date alone is enough for your sun sign — the thing you know in everyday life as your "star sign".

Time of birth: This is the most precise and influential detail for your personal chart. The birth time determines the ascendant (the sign rising on the horizon), which changes every two hours, as well as the position of all twelve houses. Without a birth time, no complete birth chart can be calculated — it can then only be an approximate map without houses and without an ascendant.

Place of birth: Influences the exact horizon and thus the ascendant as well as the house cusps. Two people born at the same time but in different places in the world have different ascendants.

If you don't know your exact birth time, you can often find it on your birth certificate or ask your parents. When the time is unknown, astrology often uses 12:00 noon as a default — but that only produces a limited chart.

The big three: sun, moon, ascendant

The three most important factors in a birth chart — and why together they give a fuller picture than the sun sign alone.

☀️
Core self

Sun

The sun stands for your conscious self, your life purpose and the energy you carry into the world. The sun sign is what most people mean by "their star sign" — the base color of your personality and what you strive for in life.

The sun shows who you want to become — not necessarily who you automatically are. It represents your self-awareness, your will and the way you seek recognition.

🌙
Emotional inner world

Moon

The moon stands for your emotional nature, unconscious habits, your needs for safety and comfort and the way you feel — before you think. It shows your inner world, which you may not immediately carry outward.

The moon sign often explains why you behave differently than your sun sign would suggest. It's the language of your feelings, your childhood imprints and your subconscious.

⬆️
Outer appearance

Ascendant

The ascendant (also "AC" or "rising sign") is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It changes every two hours and is therefore very personal — hence the importance of the birth time.

The ascendant describes how others perceive you: your first impression, your outer bearing and the mask you wear toward the world — consciously or unconsciously. It's the entry point into your chart and sets the order of all the houses.

Why isn't the sun sign enough? Many people don't feel fully captured by their star-sign description. That's often because the moon and the ascendant are very strongly expressed — and bring an entirely different quality to the personality. Only the combination of the big three gives a realistic astrological picture.

What do the planets mean?

In a birth chart the 10 astrological planets (including the sun and moon) stand for different areas of your life and personality.

☀️Sun

Identity, self and life force. The sun shows who you are at your core and where you seek energy, affirmation and recognition. The sun sign describes your conscious character and your path through life.

🌙Moon

Feelings, instincts and the subconscious. The moon shows your emotional way of reacting, unconscious habits and deepest need for security. It's closely tied to your childhood and the image of the mother.

☿Mercury

Thinking, communication and learning. Mercury determines how you think, speak, write and learn. It shows your communication style, your analytical mind and how you process information.

♀Venus

Love, beauty and values. Venus shows what and whom you love, what you find beautiful and what truly matters to you. It rules relationships, aesthetics and your relationship with money and pleasure.

♂Mars

Drive, energy and will. Mars stands for your readiness to act, assertiveness, passion and sexual energy. It shows how you fight for yourself, what drives you and how you handle conflict.

♃Jupiter

Growth, luck and expansion. Jupiter shows where you're lucky, where you grow and in which areas you develop generosity and optimism. It stands for wisdom, philosophy and the urge for more.

♄Saturn

Structure, boundaries and responsibility. Saturn shows where you learn lessons in life and must build structures. It stands for discipline, steadiness and the areas where work and patience are rewarded.

♅Uranus

Change, freedom and innovation. Uranus stands for the unexpected, rebellious and revolutionary. It shows where you break social norms, strive for freedom and take new paths.

♆Neptune

Intuition, dreams and spirituality. Neptune stands for the mystical, imagination and the longing to merge. It shows where you develop idealistic, intuitive or spiritual qualities — and where you give in to illusions.

♇Pluto

Transformation, power and depth. Pluto stands for profound change, the hidden and the drive for renewal through the destruction of the old. It shows where your greatest potential for transformation lies.

Tip: It's not just about which planet is in which sign, but also which house it's in — and which aspects it forms with other planets. A Mars in Aries in the 10th house works differently than Mars in Aries in the 4th house. The context within the chart is decisive.

What do the 12 houses mean?

The houses divide the chart circle into twelve areas of life — they show where in life the energy of the planets acts.

1

Self & appearance

The first house begins with the ascendant. It describes your outer appearance, your self-image and how you come across to others. It's the house of personality and the body.

2

Values & possessions

The second house stands for material resources, financial security and personal values. It shows your relationship with money, property and what truly matters to you.

3

Communication & siblings

The third house rules speech, thinking, short trips and your immediate surroundings. It also stands for siblings and early education, and the way you gather and pass on information.

4

Home & family

The fourth house stands for home, family of origin, childhood and emotional roots. It shows how you create a sense of security and what "home" means to you.

5

Creativity & joy

The fifth house rules creative self-expression, love, play, children and joy in life. It shows where you're playful, where you enjoy yourself and how you express affection.

6

Work & health

The sixth house stands for everyday life, routines, service and physical health. It shows your relationship with work, with obligations and how you care for your body.

7

Partnership

The seventh house — opposite the ascendant — stands for all close partnerships: romantic relationships, marriage, but also business partners. It shows what you seek in others and what you attract.

8

Transformation & depth

The eighth house stands for change, death and rebirth, intimacy, shared resources and the hidden. It shows your relationship with control, power, inheritance and deep psychological patterns.

9

Worldview & travel

The ninth house rules philosophy, religion, higher education, long journeys and the urge for meaning. It shows how you understand the world, what you believe and what you long for.

10

Career & reputation

The tenth house — the midheaven (MC) — stands for career, social standing and public reputation. It shows your ambitions, how you're perceived outwardly and what you want to achieve.

11

Friendships & visions

The eleventh house stands for your circle of friends, community, collective goals and visions of the future. It shows which groups shape you, where you find kindred spirits and how you contribute to society.

12

The unconscious & retreat

The twelfth house is the house of the hidden: the subconscious, solitude, spirituality and what escapes awareness. It also stands for retreat, dreams and old karmic patterns.

Birth chart & dreams at jume

How jume uses your personal birth chart for individually tailored night impulses.

In the jume app you can store your birth chart — date, time and place of birth. From these details jume calculates your complete birth chart with all planetary placements, houses and the ascendant.

This astrological information flows into the night impulses: the daily questions and reflection prompts jume sends you each evening. A night impulse tuned to a moon in Cancer sounds quite different from one for a moon in Capricorn — because it speaks to that person's emotional foundation, not a generic one.

When Mercury is retrograde or the full moon falls in your seventh house, jume takes that into account when choosing today's impulse. Astrology here isn't interpreted as fixed fate but as a language of the self — a tool that helps you look at your inner world with more nuance.

The birth chart is optional in jume, but it makes the night impulses noticeably more personal. Those who store it get questions that touch exactly the themes currently in the foreground of their own astrological cycle.
